The party's ideology is more socially liberal than the Democrats, but more fiscally conservative than the Republicans. The party has generally promoted a classical liberal platform, in contrast to the social liberal and progressive platform of the Democrats and the more conservative platform of the Republicans. Current policy positions include lowering taxes, allowing people to opt out of Social Security, abolishing welfare, ending the prohibition of illegal drugs, legalizing same-sex marriage, and supporting gun ownership rights.

- Libertarian policy leans towards individual responsibility and they believe in individual rights and freedoms.
- A majority of Libertarians believe in non-interventionism, which means they support the withdrawal of their country's troops from foreign countries in which their government (and/or military) is "fighting" or participating in conflicts or wars. Libertarians want to significantly decrease military spending and America's involvement in conflicts abroad a they believe that the government spends excessive amounts of money to financially support the military and the current conflicts and wars that are unnecessary, unjust, and unconstitutional. In addition, some Libertarians support strengthening their country's borders and using the military only for national defense purposes.
- Libertarians oppose gun control laws and are strong supporters of the Second Amendment (the right to bear arms) as well as the right to carry concealed weapons.
- Most Libertarians believe that the government should stay out of the matter and leave it to the individual.
- Libertarians tend to favor equal rights for gay and lesbian couples e.g. the right to get married and adopt children.
- Most Libertarians believe that the death penalty is an extreme exertion of state power and is of little use in a free society, while it can be of great use to a tyrannical government.
- While most Libertarians agree that some taxes are necessary for government to function, they also advocate a wholesale revision of the tax code to make it simpler, eliminate loopholes and special provisions, reduce the tax rate significantly, and lean towards a consumption tax rather than a tax on income.
- Libertarians, like Republicans, oppose raising the minimum wage because it hurts businesses and hurts individual opportunity.
- Libertarians believe that the role of the government should be extremely limited, especially in the economic sphere, as they an be prone to corruption and inefficiencies. The primary focus of libertarians is the maximization of liberty for all citizens, regardless of race, class, or socio-economic position.
- Libertarians support an individual’s right to choose, even if they personally disapprove. in addition they also want to redress the wrongs of the U.S. towards the Indians.
- Liberian believe that voter ID laws are unconstitutional since they potentially restrict the rights of citizens to vote.
- Libertarians believe that the private sector in a free market can achieve better outcomes than government bureaucracies, because they make better decisions on resource allocation.
- Libertarians want to eliminate all restrictions on immigration.
- Libertarians want to let parents control all educational funding. In addition, they also want to end compulsory busing & compulsory education, and believe that the government should stay out of education in general.
- Libertarians want to keep families free from government intrusion.
- While most Libertarians believe that tyranny around the world must be condemned, they also believe that the US should not intervene in the affairs of other countries.
- Libertarians believe that workers should only join a union activity by choice only. In addition, they also believe in eliminating the welfare state, and having no restrictions on work.
