The party's platform is generally based on American conservatism in contrast to the contemporary American liberalism of its rival, the Democratic Party. The Republican Party's conservatism involves supporting free market capitalism, limited government, strong national defense, opposing regulation and labor unions, and supporting socially conservative policies.
Individual and Community:
Individual and Community:
- Republican philosophy leans more towards individual freedoms, rights and responsibilities.
- Republicans prefer increasing military spending and have a more hard line stance against countries like Iran, with a higher tendency to deploy the military option.
- Republicans oppose gun control laws and are strong supporters of the Second Amendment (the right to bear arms) as well as the right to carry concealed weapons.
- Republicans believe abortions should not be legal and that Roe v. Wade should be overturned. Some Republicans go so far as to oppose the contraception mandate i.e. requiring employer-paid health insurance plans to cover contraception.
- Republicans believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman so they do not support gay marriage or allowing them to adopt children.
- Republicans tend to be staunch supporters of the death penalty.
- Republicans support tax cuts for everyone (rich and poor alike). They consider higher tax rates on the rich a form of class warfare.
- Republicans oppose raising the minimum wage because it hurts businesses.
- Republicans favor a small government — both in terms of the number of people employed by the government and in terms of the roles and responsibilities of government in society. For example, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a government agency that many Republican presidential candidates love to deride as an example of "useless" government agencies that they would shut down.
- Another example is the food stamps program. Republicans in Congress are demanding cuts in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (or SNAP). Republicans argue that there is a lot of fraud in the program that is wasting taxpayer dollars. They also want to institute clauses that force beneficiaries of the program to take more personal responsibility through measures such as mandatory drug testing, and looking for a job.
- Most Republicans tend to oppose the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
- Republicans believe these laws are necessary to prevent voter fraud.
- Republicans believe that the private sector can provide most services more efficiently than the government can. They also believe that government regulation is bad for businesses, usually has unintended consequences, and should be minimal. With many conservatives believing in "trickle-down" economics, they favor a small government that collects fewer taxes and spends less.
- Republicans want to only allow legal immigrants through tightly controlled borders. they also want to reform & toughen immigration system to emphasize family, as they believe that amnesty only encourages illegal immigration.
- Republicans don't want any federal college loans; rather, they just want to insure private loans. in addition, Republicans want to promote school choice and home-schooling, and limit role of federal government in education, as they believe that personal achievement is the best basis for access to college.
- Republicans believe that families are the cornerstone of our culture, so they support the increase of abstinence, the reduction of child welfare caseloads, and encourage adoption.
- Republicans believe that a comprehensive strategy against WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) proliferation is needed. In addition, they also believe that the US and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have a responsibility for peacekeeping. Republicans also believe that other nations that support terrorism and terrorist organizations, such as Al-Qaeda and ISIS, are just as guilty as those organizations. Republicans also want the US to either leave or Reform the United Nations (U.N.) to end abuse, unfairness, and abortion funding.
- Republicans support employee ownership over union elites, as they believe that the best jobs program is economic growth. in addition, Republicans also believe that small businesses deserve better treatment from the government.
